Meet Phil Hogan: The Visionary Behind Tiberone
Overview
In 1988, Phil left Ireland in pursuit of travel and opportunity. What started as a leap into the unknown soon turned into a life-defining journey. His first stop was Windsor in the UK, where he began his career in the oil industry. From there, he embarked on an incredible chapter of exploration and work across the mountains of Europe and Africa,
the arid deserts of the Middle East, the rugged terrains of South America, the offshore platforms of the North Sea, and the jungles of Gabon — all while working on instrumentation systems and oil rigs.
Eventually, Phil returned to the UK and settled in the oil and gas capital of Europe— Aberdeen. The transition marked a shift from field work to the classroom, as he became a technical trainer. This period was pivotal, it not only sharpened his technical expertise, but also laid the groundwork for the strategic thinking, team leadership, and vision that would later define his role as a CEO. After working in Aberdeen, Phil returned to London to join IBM, working on a strategic air traffic control systems implementation. He gained valuable experience in aviation IT over several years, including time at the London Air Traffic Control Centre.
From Unix to Remedy: The Evolution Begins
By 1996, a new opportunity emerged. A friend working at the innovative California based Sun Microsystems introduced Phil to a rapidly growing company called Remedy. Remedy was pioneering a new workflow solution, and Sun needed a technical trainer to support their education initiatives. Phil stepped in, working on Unix systems and helping Sun Microsystems push Remedy into international markets.
This took him to San Francisco, where he immersed himself in Remedy’s ecosystem before returning to the UK to train others. As Remedy grew, so did its global partner network. Phil was soon headhunted by Horizon (now Fusion), a solely dedicated Remedy partner, to lead their education efforts. Before leaving that role, he handed over his responsibilities to a colleague named Ben Chehraz, a key connection that would prove significant.
The Birth of Tiberone
By the late 1990s, Phil was working with clients such as Nationwide Building Society, offering specialist expertise in Remedy, which was rapidly gaining popularity in banking and other sectors. Recognising both the demand and opportunity, Phil stayed in touch with Ben Chehraz and in 2001, the two founded Tiberone. As Remedy was later acquired by BMC, Tiberone naturally became a BMC partner, working across a wide range of customers and building relationships with hundreds of clients. It was the start of something far bigger…
Tiberone’s reputation grew, and so did its footprint. Work with Vodafone in the Netherlands introduced Phil to Pieter Raiven, leading to Tiberone Netherlands. A major project with Siemens in Germany led to a collaboration with Alex Ries, forming Tiberone Germany. In Portugal, a new partnership with Sandra Almeida helped launch Tiberone Portugal. This was a pivotal moment—one that ushered in a period of significant growth, transformation, and renewed strategic direction. Phil counts this period of international expansion as one of his proudest achievements: building a company from a UK base into a truly global operation, powered by experienced, passionate people.
The Phil-osophy That Drives It All
At the core of Phil’s leadership philosophy is a personal commitment to empowering others. He is driven to create an environment where his team can grow, learn, and thrive as world-class professionals—reflecting his belief that a company’s success begins with its people.
Phil recently reflected on his UK-based team, particularly those specialising in the VM02 space. In 2024, the team came together in person for the first time since the pandemic, brainstorming, problem-solving, and strengthening client relationships. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with clients recognising the team’s efficiency and impact. “Having a small, agile company is a superpower,” says Phil. “It’s like an efficient IT system—each component working together, quick to respond and highly effective.” Phil is driven by a culture of connection, innovation, and continuous improvement. His focus on personal development is unwavering; even in the fast paced, high-pressure world of IT delivery, Phil is always introducing new ways to help his team evolve. For him, success isn’t just about delivering results—it’s about building capability, confidence, and something meaningful for the future.
Looking Back, Moving Forward
Phil is driven by the ambition to take Tiberone beyond the traditional reseller model. He envisions developing original products, strengthening direct customer relationships, and creating something truly independent. “I’d like to think we can build something more independent—develop our own products, truly own our customer relationships, and take pride in the strength and growth of the business,” he explains. Looking ahead, his focus is on advancing Tiberone’s capabilities in AI, particularly in AI Ops. “Not just within the BMC definition,” he says, “but through our own interpretation, something product-led, something that stands on its own.” It’s a forward-looking vision rooted in innovation, ownership, and a bold commitment to shaping the future.
Away from work, Phil is an avid open water swimmer, a keen traveller, and an enthusiastic reader. In fact, he’ll be sharing some of his favourite reads in the next issue of Tiberone’s internal newsletter as part of our Book Club column. He’s also a former marathon runner, bringing the same dedication and endurance to both his personal life and professional journey.
From leaving Ireland with ambition, to leading a multinational, thriving IT company, Phil has lived the vision he once dreamed of. Tiberone stands as a reflection of his journey built on trust, fuelled by expertise, and driven by a relentless pursuit of progression.
